DRIVER - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start volunteering?

You start by calling 603-821-0569 and speaking with the Transportation Coordinator. They will guide you through the on-boarding process.

Will I get reimbursed for my mileage?

CVTC currently offers monthly mileage reimbursement at $0.67 per mile.

How do I choose which rides I’ll give?

CVTC supports drivers selecting rides based on their availability, through TripList, our web-based portal that drivers access with a username and password.

How much time do I have to commit to volunteering?

CVTC suggests that drivers sign-up for a minimum of four rides per month. When reviewing open rides, drivers can see an estimate of how long the complete ride will take.

Am I supposed to help the riders at their appointments?

Our drivers solely focus on the ride. If a rider needs assistance, they may have someone join them on the ride. The Transportation Coordinators take care of these potential issues when the rider registers their ride and communicates with the driver giving the ride.

Do I have to go through a background check?

Yes, to ensure everyone’s safety, volunteer drivers undergo background checks with NH State Police, NH Division of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services, the National Sex Offender Registry and Google. The on-boarding process will cover this in detail.

How does serving as a volunteer driver affect my car insurance?

The State of NH has two statutes that support Volunteer Drivers. The first prohibits insurance companies from raising your rates, just because you are a volunteer driver (NH Rev Stat § 412:17-a (2015). Volunteers in the State of NH are also protected under NH Rev Stat § 508:17 (2015) for limited liability.

I spend the winter in a warmer climate. When I come home in the spring, do I have to re-register to start driving again?

No, your registration lasts for three years. You inform the Transportation Coordinators when and how long you will be away. When you return, just give us a call to say you will start driving.
